Borough Market’s latest beer now on sale
Drinkers at the Globe Tavern in Borough Market can now enjoy a beer produced from hops grown just a few yards away in the Market Hall and flavoured with tea from a nearby trader.
Hops were planted in the Market Hall five years ago and this is the fourth beer to be brewed with the crops.
This year's beer – an Earl Grey Saison – has been made by 'nomadic brewer' Daniel Tapper who collected the hops from the market and took them on the Jubilee line to Bermondsey's Partizan Brewery where the brew was produced.
The Borough was once the centre of the hop trade with the Hop Exchange and a number of merchants' buildings on Borough High Street still bearing witness to that history.
A limited run of over 6,000 bottles has been produced, and will be available from Borough Market and distributed by Partizan to independent retailers throughout the UK, priced at £3.30.
The Borough Market Earl Grey Saison is also available on draught at The Globe Tavern in Bedale Street.
"What better way to celebrate our position at the heart of London than with a seasonal beer grown with our own hops, flavoured with one of our expert trader's tea and fertilised with leftover coffee grounds," said Darren Henaghan, the market's managing director.
"In effect, it's essence of Borough Market in a glass. We hope our customers will enjoy raising a toast!"
